So you’re about to start a family. Congratulations! Happy event though it will undoubtedly be, the prospect of becoming a proud parent can be a little daunting, especially if the new arrival is your first. There’s no question a baby will change your life, but with careful planning and organisation there’s every reason to expect it will be a joy rather than a burden.
At Herts & Essex Lofts we have a lot of experience in helping mums and dads to be prepare for the big day, helping them turn their loft spaces into spacious, light filled nurseries and playrooms – so much more preferable than a cramped box bedroom.
Typically, a loft conversion can be completed within six weeks – which with nine months’ notice gives you plenty of time to get everything ready for baby’s home coming. Of course, you have a million and one other things to think about as well, and we thought it might be helpful to share a few ideas and contact details with you here. So here goes:
Baby Health Care
First, the serious bit. For professional support you’d be well advised to get in touch with the Waltham Forest branch of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT), which you can do here. They have a parent support network that can advise and assist you in such matters as antenatal classes, home birthing and breast feeding. They also hold regular nearly new sales of top quality baby clothes and equipment at bargain prices.
Baby & Toddler Groups
Walthamstow has a wealth of baby and toddler groups where mums (and dads!) can network and enjoy coffee, biscuits and a brief respite whilst their kids play or have a sing-a-long. Most have a baby area with blankets, mats, baby rockers and even baby gyms! Local groups include Tots n Toys, Dads ‘R’ Us, Tanz Toddlers and the Walthamstow Toy Library and Play Centre. You’ll find a complete listing and contact details here.
Baby Friendly Restaurants
There is adult life after baby, and very civilised it can be too. One of the best local baby friendly restaurants is the William Morris Bar & Restaurant. It has high chairs, spacious baby change cubicles and a large cupboard filled with toys for children to help themselves. The menu has steaks, venison, shark and swordfish and extra plates to share with the kids. Other venues worthy of mention are The Village Kitchen (children under 10 eat free) and Le Delice E17 restaurant and coffee shop.
Parent & Baby Cinema
If you’re a filmgoer you can catch the latest releases at Walthamstow’s Empire Cinema without missing a baby feed or nappy change! They have a dedicated parent and baby screening every Monday morning, with lights up and sound down for a soothing, stress free atmosphere. It’s designed for very young children (0-2 years) and screenings are for parents and guardians only. It’s no baby, no entry, so definitely a safe space.
