A health plan for Walthamstow fitness freaks!

Want to fight the flab, do a wedding workout, get match fit, train for the ski slopes or prepare to run the London Marathon?  Whatever your reasons  for getting and staying in the pink of health, a home gym is one of the most enjoyable and effective ways of doing so, if only because it’s so much more comfortable than turning out for a jog on a wet or windy day!

At Herts & Essex Lofts we’ve had considerable experience in helping home owners convert their lofts into gyms, which make staying trim easier and more rewarding. Of course enjoying good health is as much a way of life as a daily workout, and for those who want to go the whole hog, here are some Walthamstow suppliers who can help you realise your potential.

Whole Food Stores & Farmers Markets

If you want to eat yourself fit a good place to start would be Second Nature, Wood Street, Walthamstow (T 020 8520 7995), a local independent whole food store specialising in locally sourced organic produce.  They’re open 7.30am to 5.00pm daily and make home deliveries. Walthamstow Farmers Market (in the town square every Sunday from 10am – 2pm) have a superb selection of fresh food stalls including Woodhouse Farm pork butchers (try their Tamworth Cross pork); Sea Fayre, which sells fish from their own boats; and Plot 44, which sells handmade jams and condiments (try their sweet pepper relish).

Personal Trainers

If you’re serious about getting fit a personal trainer can put together a programme tailored to your needs and give you the encouragement and motivation to see it through.  Thrive Fitness, which operates in E17, offer one-to-one and group fitness training at your home, office or gym, including sports specific training and pre and post-natal exercise programmes.  They field a team of three male and three female trainers whose specialities include skiing, running, kung fu, boxing and sports massage.  One-on-one sessions start at £38.50 for a one-off one hour session, with 10% or 15% discounts for block bookings.

Sports Clubs & Leisure Centres

When you’ve honed your body to perfection in your home gym, you might have a hankering for some competitive sport, or simply the camaraderie of team games and group training sessions.  Walthamstow Sports & Social Club offers squash, tennis, cricket and personal fitness. It’s also got a comfortable clubhouse and bar (Annual membership from £175).  Other local venues of note are the Sylvestrian Leisure Centre, which has two swimming pools, a sports hall and fitness suite (Annual membership from £275), and Pure Muscles Gym and Boot Camp, which does what it says on the tin (Annual membership from £300).

Home Gym Equipment

There are some special considerations to bear in mind when converting your loft to a home gym, like floor reinforcement, good ventilation and access /power points for gym equipment.   With that in mind it would be helpful to know in advance what equipment you plan to install before the build.  As to the kit itself, local suppliers include Gym Equipment for Sale of Walthamstow, who stock a massive range of new, used and refurbished equipment including treadmills, cross trainers, spin bikes and rowing machines.  World of Health & Leisure, also in Walthamstow, specialise in weight lifting and weight training products.
